It can be recognized by peculiar dark muzzle, with a lighter hair line between the eyes. Red Hartebeest live in small bachelor groups or family groups with female and young, which may or may not also include a mature trophy animal, in the south-western part of the African continent. You can hunt Red Hartebeest in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

When to hunt Red Hartebeest?

In South Africa and Botswana hunting is open all year, however, the months of March to November are more comfortable to hunt from the climate point of view. In Namibia hunting is open from February to November. Red Hartebeest’s behavior is not greatly affected by change of seasons, but an abundance of food usually stimulates mating activity, making old and mature animals easier to identify and approach.

The long, pointed muzzle of the Hartebeest does not just give the antelope an unusual appearance - it provides a number of important evolutionary advantages. It makes it more convenient to graze, especially in long grass and wooded areas: the Hartebeest can pick the most nutritious parts of the plants. Thus, they require less food, and if the plants are juicy enough, are less dependent on water sources, as compared to other antelopes. On the other hand, their eyes are located on top of their heads, which allows them to keep an eye on the environment even while they are grazing. This makes spot-and-stalk, the preferred method of Hartebeest hunting, especially challenging, and the hunter must be prepared for a long shot.

Why hunt Red Hartebeest?

Hartebeest has been the staple food for many different groups of humans since the dawn of times. From ancient Egyptians to the Dutch settlers in South Africa (who gave the species its name, which can be translated as “a deer-like animal”), humans pursued it with relish Unsurprisingly, studies show that Hartebeest meat is one of the most nutritionally valuable. The long head with dark muzzle and a light-colored mask-like stripe between the eyes, along with the uncommon bracket-shaped horns, makes the Red Hartebeest stand out among other trophies, and encourages the younger generation to ask “what beast is this?” And the experience of hunting Hartebeest will give you quite a yarn to spin in return!
