About hunting in Mexico
From the beautiful desert mountains of Sonora in the north to the exotic jungles of the Yucatan in the south, Mexico features a wide variety of habitats and game animals that attract hunters from around the world. Hunting in Mexico is conducted on both private ranches and government reserves, and wildlife has been generally well managed in recent years, resulting in healthy populations of the most desirable game animals. Mexico is perhaps best known for its huge desert mule deer, but it is also an excellent destination for desert bighorn sheep, white-tailed deer, Coues deer, mountain lions, and both white-lipped and collared peccary. Mexico’s jungles feature species that can be hunted nowhere else in North America, including the red and gray-brown brocket deer and the ocellated turkey. Hunters also flock to Mexico to take advantage of its outstanding wing shooting for doves and many species of waterfowl.

Planning your trip
Visas and Firearms
Citizens of the USA, Canada, Japan, the UK, and the EU are not required to obtain a Mexican visa for a tourist visit. If you are bringing your own firearms to Mexico, a permit from the Secretary of National Defense is required, and this must be arranged well in advance with the help of your outfitter. Double check that all serial numbers and other information are correct, or you could be in for problems at the border.
Upon arrival
When you arrive in Mexico you should be met by your outfitter’s liaison who will assist you in clearing your firearms. It’s crucial that the gun permit and other paperwork is in order. Keep the gun permit with you at all times. Allow plenty of time to get to your hunting area, as driving after dark in Mexico is not recommended.
Hunting
Deer and sheep hunts are generally conducted by spot-and-stalk, although sometimes vehicles are used, especially during deer hunts. Hunts in the desert generally takes place during the winter months and temperatures can swing widely from very cold mornings and evenings to midday heat. Coues deer hunts require long periods of glassing and high-quality optics are crucial.
After the hunt
It's usually possible to take capes and horns with you if they are properly cleaned and dried. Check with your outfitter for the current rules, and ensure you are carrying the proper licenses and permits on your person.
