Why United Kingdom

Hunting in United Kingdom: Classic Deer Stalking

Classic Deer Stalking

Stalking red deer in the Scottish Highlands is one of the world’s most classic hunts. Many other varieties of deer are abundant throughout the UK as well

Hunting in United Kingdom: Upland Birds

Upland Birds

The UK, especially Scotland, is home to some of the finest (and often most expensive) wing shooting in the world. Driven hunts for grouse and pheasant are wildly popular as are walk-up hunts with dogs

Hunting in United Kingdom: Tradition and Culture

Tradition and Culture

The traditions of the hunt that began in the highlands and moors of the UK have spread throughout much of the world as a result of British influence. Hunters visiting the UK today often stay in castles, eat traditional fare, and explore the same highlands and moors that hunters have trod for centuries

About hunting in United Kingdom

Hunting deer on foot, known as “stalking,” is a long and storied tradition in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales are home to a wide variety of deer species, including native red deer, fallow deer, and roe deer, as well as a host of introduced deer species from around the world, including sika deer, Pere David deer, hog deer, muntjac, and Chinese water deer. Feral goats can also be hunted in the Scottish Highlands. Bird shooting is longstanding tradition throughout the UK, and driven shoots for pheasants and grouse on managed estates can produce bags of hundreds of birds. Almost all hunting in the UK is conducted on large estates which are managed intensively to promote and sustain well-balanced wildlife and gamebird populations.

Planning your trip

Visas and Firearms

Citizens of the USA, Canada, and EU countries do not need a visa to visit UK for tourism. British Firearm Certificates are a temporary import permit required for bringing your own firearms to the UK; work with your outfitter to ensure that your permit is in order. Loaner firearms can also be arranged on most estates.

Upon arrival

Most hunters arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. Your outfitter should make arrangements to assist you if you are clearing firearms upon entry.

Hunting

Hunting in the UK is all about tradition, and you're expected to look the part. Wear your Hereford cap and Wellingtons, and don't forget your rain gear, as it is almost always wet and misty, especially in the Highlands.

After the hunt

Most big-game hunts are priced according to the antler size of the game harvested. Because game is privately owned and subject to intensive management, estates have differing rules regarding trophy preparation following the hunt, so discuss this with your outfitter before you go.
