About this hunt

Rib eye of the sky! Not only a great eating bird, but a real Saskatchewan migratory trophy bird. We hunt cranes like we hunt all waterfowl in Saskatchewan, in the decoys. We use full body and sock crane decoys to hunt these wily birds. Crane's eye sight is very sharp so we use natural cover as much as possible when we hunt cranes, although Aframe and layout blinds are lethal in any situation. Most hunters approach crane hunting apprehensively, until they do it. With a 6 foot wingspan they make an impressive sight side slipping to get into the decoys. This hunt is for 1 morning hunt per day. Minimum of 4 hunters, minimum of 2 days. A booking of 6 hunters get you a private group.

Where you will hunt

Territory

Our area is truly unique in the fact that we get all of the migratory game bird that has made the prairies a number one destination. We play host to 100 of thousand of snow, blue and Ross geese, bountiful numbers of white-fronted geese, and Canada geese of every size. Being in the pothole region affords us the opportunity to hunt locally raised ducks, and we have them in big number. Mallards, pintails, wigeons, gadwall, blue and green-winged teal, shovelers, as well as numerous divers are very typical in a hunt here. We have an added bonus bird that is a true prairie trophy, the Sandhill crane. Most hunters have never experienced the site and sound of decoying Sandhills like we offer here. We also offer upland bird hunts for Hungarian Partridge and sharp-tailed grouse in our hunt packages. We use flushing dogs when hunting the hedgerows and short grass prairie for the speedy targets.

Great Saskatchewan Waterfowling Mid-September to Mid-October

8.7 of 10

We have visited Garett every year since he purchased the Lucky Lake operation and we were there before him. Hunting for geese and ducks is usually good to excellent and infrequently throw in a less than great shoot which may be fun for some of us due to watching thousands of high-flying migrators. Over our experience, the guides figured out how to often fool the abundant sandhill cranes, limit 5, into coming to field decoys. They infrequently hunt upland birds since it has become so spotty for shirptail grouse and Hungarian partridge although they offer such upon request generally toward October when most crops have been harvested. The big plus is the positive-fun atmosphere with the guides and lodge staff. Beautiful prairie countryside with variable numbers of large game to observe including moose. Food is good with on-your-own breakfast, large lunch meal, nap, and then smaller dinner. Most evenings are spent sharing stories and travel experiences with other hunters but old people often go to bed early.

Big risk has been sharing lodge in the evenings with other hunters who are mean-spirited, prejudged against anyone different, unknowledgeable of any science including gun safety research, and loudly negative.....typical American NRA members. Rooms are small, thin walls, and often will be shared.

Great Waterfowling Experience!

10.0 of 10

Friendly and professional guides and lodge staff. Two guides per hunting group to allow scouting before each hunt. Two separate hunts each day, with a mid-day break. Very good decoy hunting for geese, ducks, and sandhill cranes.
